Looks like the Germans have given up on the Euro rules

Times City Diary 27/11/03

Stable lad

WHICH European politician said the following, and about what and when? "This
is a serious danger. The envisaged change of rules would undermine the very foundations of monetary union . . . Public confidence in the euro rests not least on the knowledge that the rules of the game will not be changed."

The answer is the German central bank chief, Ernst Welteke, speaking about some minor changes to the rules governing the European Central Bank . . . a day after the Germans and the French drove a coach and horses through the
Stability Pact that is meant to support the euro.
