Australian hypocrisy – No not about the Rugby.

Early this year Professor David Flint the head of the campaign group Australians For Constitutional Monarchy attended a ceremony where the French Consul-General conferred a knighthood on an Australian academician.
I turned to Gough Whitlam, who was sitting behind me, and said:

“Mr Whitlam, it is all your fault that Australians have to go to a
foreign republic to get a knighthood?”

He roared with laughter and said, “Yes, I have five or six of those
Myself”.

It reminds me of the attitude of Virginia Wolff who was well aware that by her antics that she was destroying the society, whose benefits she herself enjoyed. Not creative destruction, just destruction.
