This is how much power they have

More often than not when benioghted Eurosceptics claim that Brussels has all the power, they are told by wiser heads that they have been eating something funny. However in a report that is going through the European Parliament by one Dr Hans-Peter Martin MEP a German socialist. Mr Martin, or maybe Her Docktor is no numpty, the former Foreign Editor of Germman newspaper Der Spiegel and author of the very succesful and very wrongheaded book, The Global Trap. However skewed his views are on globalisation and trade there is no doubt that he knows what he is talking about. So when he says the following...

"Industry, academic and political observers agree that some 80% of all framework decisions of importance for economic policy in the EU area are now taken in Brussels. As a result, the Council, Commission and Parliament have assumed outstanding importance. Around 80% of respective national legislative provisions are also based on policy laid down at European level".

then maybe we should take him seriously. This is hard bitten fact. The ability of the nation state in Europe to make descisions based on what is best for them is no longer extant. Please note that he talks about the EU not the Euro-zone.
