Fainting in Coyles An occasional letter from the
Heart of Euroville
Thursday, April 03, 2003
An American general today made a fleeting visit to the damaged and disconsulate capital. It was on a mission to encourage forward troops and to hold peace talks with the defeated opposition. The opposition spokesman was seen on State broadcasters claiming that the American advances were mythical and that their overweening arrogance would be overthrown by popular support and a long term guerrilla action. Hamed Al-Solaaana proclaimed that American military might could never win the hearst and minds of the people and swore that the political leadership remained in place and was solid in its support for the regiemes policies. However the general pointed out that many in the political establishment were secretly talking to American and coalition forces, and though less than half had actually defected he expected more to join them.
Colin Powell then left the meeting with EU leaders.
